Pacer Ishwar Pandey and spinner Parvez Rasool claimed two wickets apiece to rattle the hosts, but after being 128 for six at tea, SA were rescued by Wayne Parnell (64) and Simon Harmer (68) through a 134-run, unbroken partnership for the seventh wicket.
