An unidentified man died after coming under the wheels of a speeding dumper vehicle in Dombivili area of Thane district on Friday evening, police said. The incident took place on Rajendra Prasad road, said an official adding that the victim`s identity was yet to be ascertained. The dumper driver was yet to be traced, he said. (PTI)

A 27-year-old woman tried to end her life by jumping into a creek in Maharashtra`s Thane district, an official said on Friday. She jumped off the Vitawa railway bridge but was rescued by fire brigade personnel who were alerted by those in the vicinity, Regional Disaster Management Cell chief Avinash Sawant said. (PTI)

Maharashtra on Friday reported 993 COVID-19 cases and five deaths, which took the tally to 81,60,499 and the toll to 1,48,497, a health official said. A state health department bulletin said the XBB.1.16 is the dominant variant of Omicron that was driving the case surge in the state. So far, 681 cases caused by this variant have been detected, and five persons have succumbed.
