Nuvart Mehta has pledged her life to the Terry Fox run an initiative to raise funds for cancer research for children and create awareness. The American-born Indian citizen Mehta, who turned 99 last Sunday, has been a part of the social cause since its inception in 1998.
Despite age catching up on her health, Mehta wasn't bogged down and made it to the Brabourne Stadium alone in a taxi for the 11th successive race yesterday. "This is a noble cause and that is why I want to be a part of this," Mehta told MiD DAY.
This is not the only cause that Mehta is associated with. She is also a part of polio awareness and YMCA's play group for slum kids. "I love children," she said.
However, Mehta's goddaughter Priyanka Kripalani explained further: "She did not have any kids. That is why she is very fond of them. If there is anything for the children, she will be the first one to get associated with it. I look after her but she is an independent person," said Priyanka.
The Terry Fox run, which started from Air-India building to Marine Drive flyover and ended at CCI, registered the highest collection for the year with Rs 55 lakh. Bombay Scottish (Mahim) collected a record Rs 4.50 lakh amongst several schools that participated. All these funds will go to Tata Memorial hospital.
