India's Somdev Devvarman crashed out of the men's singles first round of $1,214,500 Japan Open Tennis Championships with a 4-6, 3-6 loss to seventh-seeded Czech Radek Stepanek.

While on one hand, Czech Radek Stepanek was happy to clinch his first Grand Slam men's doubles title, on the other, he was equally happy that his partner Leander Paes finally got his hands on the only prize missing from his trophy cabinet --the Australian Open men's doubles.
