Cameron took part in his final Prime Minister’s Questions, before heading to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation to the Queen. “As I leave today [Wednesday], I hope that people will see a stronger country. It has been a privilege to serve the country I love,” he told the media.

He said post-Brexit the UK should “try and be as close to the European Union as we can be”. In his last address to parliament, he said he would advise his successor that British trade, cooperation and security would be best served by a close relationship with Europe.
