We are seeing a pattern, in fact, where housing society committees are being dissolved because of mismanagement, infighting, bickering and allegations. Then, an authorised individual or arbitrator is appointed to run the society, which may at times result in a dangerous development of this appointed person becoming all-powerful and apt to misuse his powers, though this may not be the case everywhere. Elections must be held on time, so that the reins go back to the housing society as far as possible.

Finally, redevelopment proposals need to be absolutely transparent. Browbeating and forcing members to accept a certain redeveloper or favour a party is unethical and illegal. If every housing society shows unity, transparent procedures and good management, it will be smooth going for residents in Mumbai. Yet, this wish may be utopian, as evidenced by large-scale housing wars in the city.
