As Mumbaikars drive out of town to enjoy an extended weekend, thanks to Independence Day, here’s a quick reminder to not let caution take a backseat.
The monsoon promises relatively good weather and lush greenery, and we are bound to see several picnickers at scenic water bodies on the outskirts of the city and beyond. The usual haunts are Lonavla, Khandala and Pune, since these places are just hours away from the metropolis. However, a report in this paper said yesterday, that the Pune Rural Police (PRP) have appealed to tourists to avoid Lonavla and Khandala because the heavy rainfall, which can lead to flooding, landslides and low visibility.
Despite this warning, there will no doubt be hordes of people on the roads by Saturday morning, in public transport or private cars, wending their way to different destinations. While it is good to take advantage of this break to recharge batteries, the heavy rainfall, the season, crowds and spirit can result in one getting carried away. For this reason, it must be lights, camera, caution all the way.
If in private cars, make sure your vehicles are in top condition, especially the brakes. Have emergency numbers handy for any situation and, most importantly, maintain driving discipline. Reckless overtaking and speeding is an absolute no-no at any time, but especially in this season. Keep every rule in mind and follow it to the T.

Do not mix alcohol with driving or wading into deep water. We hear reports of drunken cavorting in lakes and ponds, or under waterfalls — often ending in tragedy. Carry a plastic bag to put your waste in after picnicking. Empty food packets, beer bottles and water bottles strewn around are a common and revolting sight after all that revelry.
Picnickers also need to be respectful of women. Remember it is their holiday as much as it is yours; it is their public space as much as yours.
In the end, safety and discipline is above all. The getaway may be short, but let’s make it sweet.
