This paper had an extensive report about a Malabar Hill building battling a festering problem. A space in the compound has become a garbage site. A swathe of hutments overlooking the compound wall seems to be the problem.
Hutment dwellers from there have been sending rubbish flying down into the society premises. Waste water trickles down from the pipes. The rubbish comprises bottles, bags, food waste wrapped in paper, foul-smelling products and other rubbish.
The waste is hurled like it is a free- for-all dump, missing the garbage bins and straight onto the ground, in the society compound. The place reeks and is slick with filthy water. The residents have had their car windshields cracked as solid objects are thrown from above.
Some residents claim to have slipped and fallen, thanks to the slippery mess.

There are certain pointers here, for us to ponder on. Firstly, hutments proliferate and there are structures that are allowed to increase in height. From the ground floor, there is an upper floor that is built and then, yet another till the ‘hutment high-rise’ is complete. The people keep flowing in and the dwellings keep increasing, overshooting boundaries. Nearby spaces become convenient garbage depositories. If it is somebody else’s space, even better. Action is only taken when things get absolutely out of control or a huge health hazard means no option but attention and action. This site needs a permanent solution. All affected have suffered for too long. If India can land on the moon, there is no reason they cannot think of how to bring an end to this ugly situation. Let deep clean truly mean some deep thinking and clean results.
