Yesterday’s holiday was a compensatory off, sanctioned by the authorities in lieu of a public holiday on which the university remained open at the year’s start. However, the establishment either forgot or didn’t feel the necessity to communicate to its own students that it was a day off.

“I came from Kothrud to meet the Controller of Examination (CoE) by prior appointment, but madam has now asked me to come on November 6. I have a serious doubt regarding the result of my second-year BE exam, and if it is not resolved I’d miss the final year exam starting next week. According to rules, I can’t appear for the last year exam until I have cleared second year. But after arriving here the security guards told me that the exam department would open only on Thursday. This is damned frustrating,” said an engineering student of Sinhgad Institute who came to the university with her mother.

‘Headache’
A security personnel said, “Such unexpected holidays are a headache for us. Since morning, hundreds of students have got angry with us after coming to know that they’d have to come again tomorrow. It is actually very difficult for those coming from out of town to come again, just for an hour’s work at the varsity.”

A student who came from Daund in Ahmednagar said, “My semester exams begin November 15 and I have come to make some important corrections in my hall ticket. I planned to go back today evening but that doesn’t seem possible. The university should at least open the examination department, as it’s exam season. I have checked the UoP website but there is no mention about today’s holiday.”

UoP registrar Dr Narendra Kadu said, “Today’s holiday is not a government holiday but a compensatory off. The entire staff had been told about it well in advance. I don’t know whether it has appeared on the website. I am not aware that students have come on the campus today.” u00a0
