Traditional Mediterranean eatery Olio puts the pizzazz in dining by the seaside

For all those who have travelled to the beautiful countries lining the Mediterranean, Olio will be reminiscent of the tastes and aromas that are symbolic of the region. Olio (Italian for "oil") is like a cosy sea-facing restaurant on an island in the Mediterranean. The food is authentic Italian, Grecian, Spanish and Turkish cuisine. The setting is by the sea, with serene indoor and al fresco sections. The colours and design are co-ordinated in a harmonious blend, right down to the olive-hued menu and tablecloth. And the music is sexy Mediterranean jazz. "We have twenty uninterrupted hours of smooth jazz. So, every time you eat here, you will hear something new in the background," says general manager Heinz Egli, who has conceptualised it all, from the concept to the food.u00a0 Instead of the staid fine dining style that mars the Mumbai food scene, Olio has a vibe that is gourmet-meets-warmth and camaraderie.

Live cooking stations, Turkish and Italian wood-fired pizza ovens, two open kitchens, a private dining section and snack bar make the cuisine the star.u00a0

Egli's back-to-basics approach of simple dishes served in their traditional avatars works like a dream. The ingredients are garden fresh and the servings are a mouthful. We loved the Shawarma (shaved strips of lamb, beef or chicken, marinated on a skewer and rotated in front of a flame for several hours), grilled skewers (Lahem Meshwi, Kafta Meshwi) and the Pizza Primavera. The Chocolate Mousse with chilli and extra virgin olive oil has a blend so flavourful, it changes the way you taste chocolate.
