A police officer close to the investigation said it looked like the work of an insider. The officer said the incident took place around five days ago.

The victim, Additional Sessions Judge V K Khanna was reportedly busy in a hearing when the thief struck.

"Raj Kumar, who is his peon, was the first to discover the incident. He told the police that Khanna had put the laptop on the table for getting its battery recharged. Raj Kumar was there for a few minutes and then he went to the restroom. But when he returned he found the laptop missing. He immediately informed other staffers and a search began. When the laptop couldn't be located, they decided to lodge an FIR of theft. We filed a case under section 379 in this respect," said the officer, who did not wish to be named.

The court complex is situated in sector 6 of Saket in south Delhi. V K Khanna, the victim, sits in room number 310J inside the court premises from where the laptop was stolen. Police said that it was around 11 am when the incident took place.

"CCTV cameras have been installed in the area but there wasn't one inside the room where the theft took place," said the officer.

An assistant advocate's cell phone was stolen on August 16 from inside the Supreme Court premises. Though the police generally refuse to lodge an FIR of mobile phone theft but they registered the case as the incident took place inside the apex court and the cell phone was of an assistant advocate. A senior police officer said the matter is being investigated by the Tilak Marg police station of New Delhi district. The theft took place inside room number 13 of the Supreme Court. "A person called Sundar, who is an assistant advocate, had come in the court for the hearing of his client. He was carrying a Micromax Q-5 that was stolen by someone," said the officer. Sundar said that he put the cell phone on a table kept beside the security official of the court. But after a few minutes his mobile went missing. He said that CCTV cameras are installed inside the court premises but the incident occurred outside their range of view.
