The delegation of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) bank along with four leading metro rail companies on Monday gave a presentation to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz underground Metro line III.
During the presentation, the companies informed the planning authority that the advantage in giving the contract of constructing the metro to Japanese companies is that the firms are more technically sound and would complete the project before the deadline.u00a0
Metropolitan commissioner Rahul Asthana said, “The JICA delegation, minister of external affairs Japan and the companies from Japan have given their presentation to us about how they will implement the project if they get a chance to do it. We are pleased with the presentation and during the presentation they also told us that their technology is one of the best in the world and if given a chance they will see to it that the metro rail construction is completed in the stipulated time frame.”
Projects delayed
It should be noted that the MMRDA is already facing criticism for the slow pace of work and missing several deadlines on the 11.07-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro Rail corridor. The fate of the 32-km long second metro line between Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd is yet to be decided, as the MMRDA still has to solve the issue of the car depot and get the final environment clearance. The planning authority wants to plan and implement line three in such a manner that the work is completed in the stipulated time frame.
The MMRDA is awaiting final approval for the project from the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), which is expected to come next month. “We are confident of getting the final approval from DEA by next month, after which we will sign a formal loan agreement with JICA,” an MMRDA official said.
