The Jazz Quartet jamming up on a live stage for the first time this Friday promises an evening of smooth jazz that will appeal to all and not just the jazz lover

They will take you through all the highs and lows with their smooth jazz renditions, but will never leave you with a dull moment. Out to break the mindset of those attuned to jazz music, this dynamic jazz quartet is geared up to appease to a music lover of every genre be it rock and hip hop. Keith Peters on bass guitars, Amit Mahajan on the keyboard, Arjun Chandran on the guitar and Tillu Hule on the drums and city's own Arati Rao on guest vocals are all set to jazz up your evening.

"We are not going very heavy on the tunes, people who aren't into jazz will be able to enjoy the melody", says Peters. Expect tunes like Impressions by John Coltrane, Solar by Miles Davis, Cantaloupe Island by Herbie Hancock, Well, You Needn't by Thelonious Monk and Spain by Chick Corea.

Keith Peters, Chennai-based bass guitarist is hardly a name that goes past without creating a stir for music lovers across preferences of genre. Apart from being a performing member of music maestro AR Rahman's current troupe, he has been instrumental in delivering hits since a time as early as that of Roja. Cinema has only been a part of the versatile musician's long and path breaking career. He was also associated as keyboardist to the band that remains etched in time as one of the oldest rock acts in the country, Moksha.

Next in line came jazz that was hardly a widely played genre in the country when he started out. Peters is currently associated with the popular Martin Visser Jazz Trio and has performed with the likes of jazz musicians Louis Banks, Ranjit Barot, Amit Heri and Madhav Chari. "Louis Banks and Madhav Chari hold a special place for me, so do collaborations with artists like Milli Nair," says Peters.

Jazz for Keith Peters, who has had no formal training in music, happened out of inspiration that came from the family. "I learnt how to play the guitar from my dad. We used to listen to a lot of Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong at that time. My brother Carl and I also spent a lot of time hanging out with musicians," says Peters.
He has also been involved in delivering jazz shows with an unconventional twist, fusing the sounds with those of Carnatic music. His associations here include those like guitarist Prasanna and L Subramaniam.

The ensemble for the evening that will be playing together for the first time has three other artists. Aman Mahajan who draws his musical influences from Africa has worked with singer and songwriter Lucky Ali and Indian musicians Adrian D'souza, Amit Heri and Karl Peters. Arjun Chandran, a sessions guitarist has played at jazz festivals across the country including the Bombay Jazz Yatra with international artists Saskia Laroo and Warren Byrd and Indian ones Monica Dogra and Soulmate, the band.

Tillu Hule who studied contemporary jazz has been associated with musicians Sandeep Chowta and Amit Heri. He has also been a part of the city-based Gerard Machado Network. Arati Rao of Kaya Quartet, a city jazz ensemble, with her husky voice will be rendering guest vocals to the quartet.
