Mumbai: Railway tracks between Dadar and Parel to get garden
Updated On: 02 May, 2021 07:38 AM IST | Rajendra B. Aklekar
It may not exactly be like NYC’s Highline, but instead of muck, you may now see a garden when you finally start taking the trains to work
Soon, you will be able to look out of a train and enjoy greenery
That view of garbage and muck along the rail tracks may soon be passé. In what might be one of the largest projects in the city, the Central Railway is planning to introduce floriculture in association with Nashik-based Sahyadri Agri Products. The pilot project will be implemented in the Dadar-Parel rail stretch.
“The spectacle of garbage and overflowing drains along railway track adds to the woes of passengers. This garbage and debris along track is a nuisance and safety hazard for railways too. This garbage is generated mainly from dumping from adjacent hutments. There are attempts to clean up the place with help of flat wagons, machines and men, but it is time-consuming,” a senior official said.
CR spokesperson confirmed the development. “The railways had given out some land for vegetation under Grow More Food scheme, but complaints started pouring in about drain water being used despite restrictions and the poor labourers could not do anything else there due to lack of training and returns. To solve the vexed problem, we are giving final touches with one of India’s leading farming firms to take up a pilot project along the rail tracks. It will establish the financial viability of the project and gradually other areas will also be shifted to floriculture,” he said.
