While cases in the city are on the decline now, the number of daily cases is still much higher than the highest number of cases in the first wave. The city reported 2,848 cases on October 7 which was the highest number registered in the first wave. Up till now, in the second wave, the highest number of cases was reported on April 11 — 11,163 — which is four times the October figure. 

Also, from March 2020 to February 9, 2021, there were 3.12 lakh COVID-19 cases in Mumbai. From February 10 to April 25, the city added 3.15 lakh cases to the tally. “More than 90 per cent of these cases were from high-rises,” said an officer with the BMC. The positive is that though the number of cases increased, around 80 to 85 per cent of them were asymptomatic and the number of fatalities is far lower.

However, there is a fear of an increasing number of deaths in the coming days. “Though more young people need hospitalisation, the positive is that the recovery rate of those hospitalised is higher than in the first wave. Even the fatality rate among the sixty plus is lower now,” said Dr Avinash Supe, chairman of the Death Audit Committee.

Cases and deaths in MMR and state

In MMR, excluding Mumbai, the number of cases increased by 80 per cent from February 10 to April 27. There were 3,88,567 cases and 8,242 deaths registered from March 2020 to February 9, 2021. Since February 10, MMR reported 3,11,563 cases and 1,711 deaths. In the previous 11 months, 9,953 deaths were reported in the region. Similarly in the state, 20,48,802 cases were registered till February 9. Till April 27, more than 23,61,282 cases were added. There were 51,360 deaths that occurred due to COVID-19 before February 9 and 14,819 deaths added in the last 77 days.
