Activists line up on streets and chant Vande Mataram to denounce Islamic resolution

The Shiv Sena responded to the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind's fatwa against Vande Mataram by singing the national song at various places in the city yesterday.

Shiv Sena activists, armed with the Tricolour and party flags, lined up at every nook and corner of the city and denounced the resolution.

"If the Islamic organisation thinks our national song is un-Islamic, then they can happily go back to Pakistan.

This is India and they have displayed their anti-national behaviour by issuing the fatwa," said Shiv Sena spokesperson Neelam Gorhe.



Mahim shakha pramukh Milind Vaidya said, "The Shiv Sena criticises the fatwa and so, we decided to demonstrate by singing Vande Mataram."

The rally drew large crowds in Lalbaug and held up traffic for 30 minutes on Dr B Ambedkar road.

Against Islam

The resolution passed at the Deoband national convention meet, says Muslims should not sing Vande Mataram, as some of its verses are against the tenets of Islam. The Muslim Law Board has also backed the decision.
