Aaditya Thackeray suggests speed breakers be made of same height across the city after noticing uneven breakers while on the road

A SUGGESTION from Shiv Sena cub and Yuva Sena president Aaditya Thackeray has made the BMC decide to make the height of all speed breakers in the city uniform.

After a few uneven rides on the city roads thanks to the speed breakers, Thackeray suggested the move to make driving a smoother and less dangerous experience for the average Mumbaikar.

En route to Altamount Road a few days ago, Thackeray found that drivers in the city had to undergo bumpy rides on a daily basis because of very high speed breakers.

"My car is huge so there is no problem, but then whenever I sit in my friends' cars I can hear a scraping sound as they pass over the breakers. The breakers on the road are uneven and create a major problem," said Thackeray.

"Earlier this week, while on my way to Carter Road, I saw a driver apply brakes suddenly as he could not spot a very low breaker.

Thankfully, nothing happened, but such small speed breakers are very dangerous for drivers. There are many who travel on bikes and could have accidents because of these breakers," he added.

Thackeray is calling the initiative a Yuva Sena one. "It is Yuva Sena's initiative to enhance civic infrastructure and help the MCGM make our city better.

The speed breakers are an inevitable part of every commuter's life, be it in buses, cars, rickshaws or bicycles.

I hope that this uniformity in speed breakers will help make travelling safer for commuters and pedestrians," he said.

Rahul Shewale, BMC standing committee chairperson, confirmed that he had received a call from Thackeray informing him about the near miss because of which reworking on the speed breakers had become necessary.

"The speed breakers at certain points in the city are not built properly and need to be reworked.

The concerned department has been notified about it and this is being done for the benefit of the citizens. The work will begin next month," he said.

Guidelines

The BMC will ensure that every speed breaker in the city is in accordance with Indian Road Congress (IRC) guidelines.

The guidelines state that the central height of a road hump must not exceed 10 cm, the shape must be parabolic and the width must be at least 3.5 m.

It must also be painted in a 'V' shape and illuminated by solar cat's eyes to make it visible.

Signs coated with reflective paint must be placed 40 m in advance and must mention the speed at which the road hump can be negotiated. For a speed breaker to be legal, theu00a0 local police must permit its construction.

Follow the rules
Nandkumar Chougule, DCP, Traffic, said: "Recommendations are given by us, but civic authorities are supposed to see to it that the IRC guidelines are followed. Engineers need to have a planning sense which seems to be missing as there are no uniform speed breakers in the city. The breakers are not needed everywhere, but wherever they are, they have to be of the same height."
