SPEAKING to MiD DAY after her husband's funeral yesterday, Shubha Sharma Dey (38) remembered Jyotirmoy Dey as a caring partner, a principled man and a passionate and committed journalist.
She sought justice for Jyotirmoy's brutal murder and raised some pertinent questions for the administration to answer.

"I just want the investigating agencies to carry out a speedy and sincere investigation. How can a journalist be made to feel so unsafe in his line of duty? I think we need answers to this," said Shubha.
Recalling the events of Saturday afternoon, when she heard that her husband was no more, Shubha said, "I was working on my laptop.
It was 2.07 pm when I got a call from Dey, who said he was in Ghatkopar and would be home in 10 minutes.

It takes very little time to get from Ghatkopar to Powai, so I laid out lunch for him and began waiting. I started panicking when I didn't hear from him for 45 minutes."
"My first thought was that his bike must have skidded in the rain and I started calling him. Some calls went unanswered and some didn't connect, with the message that the phone was unreachable.
Dey always answered his phone, even if that required parking the bike, and the fact that he wasn't answering made me more worried. I kept reassuring myself, however, with the thought that the rains must have delayed him.
Two of his friends called me asking about his whereabouts since they couldn't get through to him either and then another friend called to tell me that he had heard that Dey had been shot by someone.
He said he was on his way to the hospital and asked me to get there. I rushed to the Hiranandani Hospital, only to find that Dey had been brought dead there," she added.
Life and times
"Dey moved into Amrut Nagar at Ghatkopar in the 1960s. He was fond of tea, loved simple food and his dinner consistently had two rotis and dal.

He was very happy with dal and rice whenever I gave it to him when he reached home late. Dey was fond of photography and he used to love taking walks in Hiranandani Garden's parks.
On most weekends, he would take a two-hour walk and then do push-ups.

He was very fond of exercise and worked out regularly. He was a very accommodating man and gave me the freedom to be what I wanted. Whenever he felt something was amiss, he would bring it up in his typical gentle manner.
I won't call Dey aggressive in his reporting but I would say that he was very passionate. He was very committed and his values and principles were very strong.
He wouldn't do anything half-heartedly and believed in giving everything his all, which was the best part of his personality.
I feared for him initially, but at one point I decided to surrender and go with the flow.
The fear doesn't really help, because when a person is that committed about his work, you just have to give him the freedom to operate the way he wants to," Shubha signed off.u00a0
