The final section Fantastic Beasts looks at mythical creatures large and small, like phoenixes that captivated the imagination of humankind. A dragon exhibit from Japan is the show-stealer for its stellar craftsmanship. This fascinating piece of art has been created from  a variety of metal sourced from materials left over from battle warfare.“This flexible mega exhibit can actually be moved around in any shape whatsoever,” adds Vaidehi Savnal.

Made from lacquer and mother-of-pearl, this dish shows a monkey examining a netsuke. Hailing from Japan’s Meiji period, this humanlike monkey is depicted using objects found in a human’s daily life including mirrors, and sports spectacles. It is based on the Handscroll of Frolicking Animals and Humans, and is believed to be the earliest form of Manga-style art used in Japanese comic books and cartoons that were later carried on in Japanese animation films.

Look Around You is a section that is a blessing for the Mumbai child, who needs to be aware of the wonderful wildlife in its own backyard. From the state bird — the yellow-footed green pigeon — to the magnificent Indian leopard, there’s plenty of natural discoveries waiting to be made, and the exhibits give you a crash course in them.

The first stop is at Where Do We Go From Here, a section that explains the earliest connections where humans and animals coexisted. (Left) The display showcases paintings from Bhimbetka, Madhya Pradesh, that date back to 8000 BCE, depicting a man and bull in contact; exhibits from Harappan civilisation are in the foreground (2500-1900 BCE), establishing the domesticity of the relationship. (Right) This display highlights how with growing civilisations and the emergence of wars and hunting, the equation changed, and animals were threatened, resulting in loss of species. The Narcodam Hornbill’s path to extinction starkly encapsulates this phenomenon.

The logo for the Entwined exhibition was created by the design department at CSMVS. The inspiration behind the eye-catching artwork was based on elements discovered from the Harappan civilisation. “We wanted to pay tribute to the link between humankind and animals,” shares Savnal.
