From niacinamide to retinol, skincare trends have captured the imagination of consumers for long. Such is the paradox of skincare, that it splits people into two groups: those who couldn’t care for it, and those who swear by their seven-step routine. When it comes to the latter, what can be deemed as ‘excessive’ skincare use has become an all-too-common practice. While it's easy to get caught up in the plethora of products available on the market, believing that using more is better can be counterproductive. “Skincare enthusiasts often fall prey to the belief that the more products they use, the better their skin will be. However, this notion, popularised by the beauty industry, is a dangerous misconception. Overuse of skincare products can lead to a myriad of negative consequences, from skin irritation to diminished efficacy and wasted resources,” shares Dr Ishmeet Kaur, consultant dermatologist at Dermosphere clinic.
“The belief that ‘more is better’ in skincare is a fallacy that can have detrimental effects on skin health and overall well-being. By recognising the dangers of excessive product usage and embracing a more personalised and moderate approach to skincare, individuals can cultivate healthier, happier skin,” adds the expert who insists that debunking this myth and prioritising quality, simplicity, and balance in our skincare routines will yield optimal results. Below, Kaur explores the adverse effects of excessive product usage and advocates for a more personalised approach to skincare.
