Living it up with children
ONGOING, 10 am-12 noon: This summer vacations let your child get a little creative. Sew Cra Art is conducting a 15-day workshop where the kids will learn to channelise their energy in the right direction. The workshop includes training in making things out of waste, drawing and colouring, edible clay painting, mask making, sewing and fabric embellishment, floating flowers and 3D flower making.

Also, the kids will be divided into two batches. The first batch will have children between three to six years of age and the second batch will have kids between seven to 12 years of age. The activities will be held keeping in mind the age and interpersonal skills of the child.

Abstract impressions of an artist
Ongoing, till May 26, 11 am-7pm: Pune-based artist Abhang Balasaheb is all set to display his new collection of artworks in an exhibition titled Abstract Impressionist. The works are in oil and acrylic colours on canvas. “The works illustrate my unique visual language of expressions that elaborate abstract impressionist works with regards to nature and its marvels through visual metaphors and idioms,” says the artist, who had his formal art education at Sangli followed by an advanced course at the Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya in Pune. Abhang has participated in several solo and group art exhibitions at galleries across the country.

The artist’s current series lays emphasis on the grandeur of nature. “Various forms and creative extravaganzas capturing the wonders of nature make an appearance in my works. Nature has always fascinated me and left a deep impact on my mind. These reflections have inspired and motivated me to adorn my work with picturesque visual effects,” he adds.

A creative genius
tuesday, 6:30 pm onward: There are men who squirm at the mention of a woman’s period. And then there’s Arunachalam Muruganantham, a school dropout who realised that a majority of women in India couldn’t afford sanitary pads and decided to do something about it. With limited resources at his disposal, he adopted extreme methods to conduct his research. Today, Muruganantham is hailed as a visionary whose machines are empowering poor Indian women with access to both basic feminine hygiene and a livelihood. Menstrual Man, a documentary by Amit Virmani, tells the inspiring story of Muruganantham.

Remember the time
Today and tomorrow, 10 pm: Remember the copies of Vikas Book of Children many of us grew up with? The colourful illustrations were all done by artist John Fernandes (1951-2007). Fairytale of the opera
Wednesday and Thursday, 6.30 pm: Don’t miss the screening of La Cenerentola — Rossini this week. In his take on Cinderella, composer Gioachino Rossini adapts the popular semiseria genre, an Italian genre of opera which was at the height of its popularity in the early and middle 19th century. It is distinguished by the use of elements of comedy and pathos, sometimes with a pastoral setting. Rossini has also exalted the colortura style of opera seria for his heroine, who is transformed from a scorned stepchild to a celebrated princess, not by magic but by love and her own innate goodness. 

La Cenerentola — Rossini will be conducted by Fabio Luisi.

A wild goose chase
Not that anybody needs a reason to read a good book, but if you insist, here are two — a fat, wistful-looking book about building a pagoda on a portico of a home in the Himalayas might make summers cooler and the forthcoming monsoon dreamier.

The Small Wild Goose Pagoda is Dehradun-based author Irwin Allan Sealy’s third book. In it, he describes his life in “433 square yards of India”. He looks back at life, which started in a small brick house in the Himalayas, surrounded by rosewood and litchi trees, and his many journeys.

Hitting the high notes
Friday, 10 pm: Begin your weekend with groovy DJs and artists, all at one venue. Belgian born Alix Depauw is the face behind production moniker Alix Perez, now one of the few DJs leading the drum and bass scene. His releases include labels such as Metalheadz and V Recordings. Alix retains influences from funk, soul and hip-hop. 

Zokhuma, on the other hand, is currently riding the alternative music wave. ‘Subtle, smooth, textured beats’ is how he describes his music. Then, there’s EZ Riser, the solo project of music producer Sohail Arora pushing cutting edge electronica, glitch hop, and IDM. Mumbai-based producer, OX7GEN (Aditya Ashok), is influenced by cue kingpins such as Netsky, Danny Byrd and promises liquid/ambient drum and bass.

Imagination, animated
monday, 7 pm-8.30 pm: Even if you have not watched Satyajit Ray’s classic, Gopi Gayne Bagha Bayne, don’t miss its vibrant, entertaining adaptation, Goopi Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa. This animated film is made by Shilpa Ranade, associate professor at the Industrial Design Centre, IIT Mumbai. Last year, the film opened at the Canadian Film Festival, had an Asian premiere at the Busan Festival and was screened at the New York Film Festival. It was also the opening film at the 18th International Children’s Film Festival of India, which was held in Hyderabad in October 2013. 

In the film, two friends, Goopi and Bagha, badly want to be singer and musician respectively. The only snag is that they are terrible at it. Think two out-of-tune fools, benevolent ghosts, boons and ambitious plans to woo princesses — Goopi Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa is one ambitious musical comedy.
