Lost wax technique
The lost wax technique has been used in India for centuries to create beautiful objects. And a great example to get inspired from is the full-scale lost wax bronze replica of sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise (1425-52), a masterpiece of the Florentine Renaissance.
A session on this art technique has been organised as part of The Florentine Renaissance: The City as the Crucible of Culture exhibition and as a part of this workshop you can try your hand at making a wax object, interact with artisans and watch a video documenting the process.

Ply-split braiding
The very thought of creating solid, durable pieces using thread seems a good reason to sign up for this ply-split braiding workshop. This traditional braiding practice is used to make camel belts and plied cords. But this can also be used to create all sorts of things such as containers or garments. The technique is found only in India, in north-western regions such as Jaisalmer, Bikaner and other border regions near Pakistan. The workshop will be conducted by Errol Pires who is a senior faculty member at National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, who says that this form of craft can also be healing.
