Indian art masters go under hammer

Saffronart brings a unique mix of contemporary and modern artworks as part of two live auctions

Around 137 lots of artworks featuring Indian modernists and contemporary artists will be put on sale via two back-to-back live auctions — Contemporary Day Sale and Modern Evening Sale — in the city on February 12.

Bharati Kher’s Train’D To Kill 1, a contemporary artwork created entirely from bindis is expected to fetch a maximum of Rs 2 crore
Organised by the Indian auction house, SaffronartArt, the event will kick-off with Contemporary Day Sale featuring 67 lots of works by contemporary artistes like Bharati Kher, Subodh Gupta, TV Santhosh, Thukral and Tagra, and Atul and Anju Dodiya, among others.
The opening lot is Kher’s Train’D To Kill 1, a contemporary artwork created entirely out of bindis. The artwork, the auction house says, explores feminism, class, and the dichotomy of tradition and modernity. Kher’s work is expected to fetch a maximum of Rs 2 crore.

The Modern Day Sale on the other hand will feature 70 lots of works by Indian modernists like Jehangir Sabavala, SH Raza, Akbar Padamsee and Jagdish Swaminathan, among others. It will open with Sabavala’s Cape and Promontory (1977), which is estimated to go for anywhere between Rs .2 crore to Rs 1.8 crore.
The bidding will take place both in the room as well as via phone and online.
