"Five years ago, I wrote a play about Ghalib. That sparked my interest in Urdu, and I have been trying to master the language ever since. The entire 17-member group is fascinated by classical music, ghazals and nazms (verses) and whenever we meet, we discuss shayaris and the works of Urdu singers and poets. So, Urdu not being our first language did not hinder us from taking the initiative," he says.

The literature is chosen from the vast sea of creations by Hafiz Jalandhari, Saahir Ludhiyanavi, Joan Eliya, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Mirza Ghalib, Ameer Khusrow, Meer Taqi Meer among other stalwarts.

The event is informal in nature as there is a constant interaction and dialogue between the audience and artistes. In fact, the audience is encouraged to participate by responding to the artiste’s questions. "Sometimes, the audience members bring up questions from our earlier shows," Bhutkar says.

The performance has been a part of some prestigious festivals too. Recently, Sukhan was the inaugural performance at the Vinod and Sarayu Doshi National Theatre Festival, Pune, in February.
