It is used to represent the people we know and come in contact with and how they change the way we look at the world and the past. Born and raised in Delhi, the Mughal monuments have officially represented the past for the artist, which became personal through visits with friends and family and time spent there.

“In painting easily recognisable elements of Mumbai’s cityscape, I’m also questioning that kind of an attitude to a city, where we reduce it to its most iconic elements. Is that all a city is? I feel a great deal of a city’s many histories is lost when we do that. The title, Pehchaan translates as recognition or identity.

It is an attempt to map the relationship between the icons of a city and its identity — how that identity or knowledge of it is often unfortunately reduced to simply the most populace aspect of it,” the artist explains. He mentions that he creates a screen of glassware in front of the monuments turning them into a kaleidoscope of colours and shapes.

“On a formal level, I am interested in contrasting the solidity and antiquity of the stone monument with the transparency and delicacy of the glassware, and the challenges this presents to me as a painter,” the artist says.
