The man's graduated with ease from doing-splits-over-a-motorbike (remember Phool Aur Kaante) to having the audiences in splits. The unlikely hero, who is gearing up for his next rom-com Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji, talks to-the-point about his two decades of drama and a decade of family bliss.

Role play
Every actor should be able to do all sorts of genres, which is why I haven't restricted myself to any one. Besides, I didn't want my performances to appear repetitive; that would be so boring.

I'm very fortunate that I've been appreciated for the roles that I've doneu00a0-- that's something that every actor wants. When I'm choosing a role, I ask myself 'will the film work and does it give me something new to do?' And I must say, that formula has worked well for me.

I guess I'm not the conventional hero, I'm more drawn to character-driven roles. But that's never been a conscious choice, it's just that I've always wanted to do this kind of cinema right from the time I was a child.

I grew up watching heavyweight cinema,u00a0 Hollywood films, local films and of course Amitji (Amitabh Bachchan) and Dharamji (Dharmendra) films.

They would give me a high! So when I entered the industry, I was playing character roles when many others were busy being heroes. Gangaajal was an experimental film when I did it, though now it might be considered commercial. Thakshak and Zakhm were unconventional films too, but I found a soul in them.

You, me aur family
The last two decades have indeed been very eventful, but last year was one of the most spectacular year of my life. Barring the box-office success of my films, Kajol and I were blessed with a son, Yug, and nothing gets more special than that.

I'm looking forward to taking a vacation with my family soon, though I have a few tight schedules in the coming months. But actually, I'm quite the specialist when it comes to compartmentalising my life. You won't see me at parties post 6pm or working on Sundays.

There are no compromises when it comes to family time. In fact, both Kajol and I might be actors, but we never discuss work at home. There's more to life, after all.u00a0
