India fast bowler Mohammed Shami was bestowed with the Arjuna Award on 9 January 2024 by the President of India Droupadi Murmu. Shami`s name was recommended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India after his sensational outing in the ODI World Cup 2023.

On 19th November, Australia defeated India by 6 wickets to win the ICC World Cup Final 2023. When asked about the reasons for losing the ICC World Cup final, Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami said, "The thing was that we did not have enough runs. If we had 300 runs, we would have easily defended it...". Additionally, the cricketer also spoke on the UP government`s decision to build a stadium in his village and on PM Modi meeting the Indian Cricket team after the match. Shami said that after losing the world cup when the morale was down, then PM’s presence increased the confidence.
