Neither here nor there that sums up the plight of hundreds of former soldiers who have been dumped by Britian, the country they fought for in World War II. The state government earlier provided them Rs 10 a day to survive since October 1, 1989. It raised the sum from monthly Rs 300 to Rs 600 in January 1, 1999 to Rs 1275 in August 1, 2004. Yet, these men pose a peculiar dilemma. The irony is that most of them fought against Germans as part of the British Army during the World War II. After the World War II, they served Indian Army for a short duration, however post independence most of them who could not fit in the recruitment criteria of Indian Army were either rejected or they quit. While the country today is celebrating the 62 Republic, the fate of this diminishing World War II veterans and their widows are hanging. Will they get a reason to smile in their twilight days of their life, which may set anytime? The State Department of Sainik Welfare HQ at Pune through their 30 districts offices all over Maharashtra have been supporting the veterans in every possible way and have even requested the state government to increase the financial assistance from Rs 1275 to Rs 3500, which is minimum pension to any government servant as per the 6th pay commission.
