A 64-year-old lifer who jumped parole in 2001 has been arrested by the DN Nagar police. Suleman Chouhan was first arrested in 1976 for killing a boy while playing cricket. Twenty-one years ago, he was to return to Amravati jail after the end of his parole, but he went underground. Acting on a tip, the police raided Chouhan’s Andheri home and arrested him on Saturday.
Sub-inspector Dadasaheb Gosavi of DN Nagar police station told mid-day, “In those days, the DN Nagar police station had not been established and cases under our jurisdiction were registered at Andheri police station. In 1976, Suleman Chouhan was 18 when he had a fight with a friend while was playing cricket. Chouhan stabbed his friend in the stomach with a stump, killing him on the spot.”
Gosavi said their crime intelligence unit was recently alerted about Chouhan’s presence in Andheri. “We arrested him and informed the Amravati jail. It was Chouhan’s second parole that he jumped.”
“The incident happened at Gaothan on SV Road in Andheri West. Suleman lived at Millat Nagar, Oshiwara. On July 31, 2001, he was supposed to return to the jail but he didn’t,” said DCP Manjunath Singe.
