Plotlines where goons flash arms in broad daylight and where trigger-happy mobs take control of the streets are a craze among today’s web series-bingeing audiences. These stories present a parallel universe. Set against this backdrop, the prevalent gun culture in India is put under the spotlight in Point Blank, a documentary by writer-director, Naman Saraiya. Set in North India, it explores the diverse gun-owning demographic, its ownership and legal issues, he adds.

The episode will be screened at a suburban venue, and is part of a five-episode series, released by VICE World News that scrutinises gun ownership in the Asia-Pacific region, with episodes based in countries like Afghanistan, Thailand and The Philippines, apart from India. “I came on board to develop and piece together the stories in the context of India, alongside series director Steve Chao,” shares Saraiya. “The documentary shows varied perspectives by putting together information from lawyers, activists, lobbyists, defence experts, gun shop owners, illicit makers and users of guns as well.”
From gun-worshipping ceremonies to shooting open fire at weddings, the weapon is also considered a status symbol in the country. “Three-quarters of civilians owning small arms are reportedly illegal in India. The episode also looks at various reasons why people across India own and use guns; and how it is considered vital by families to pass down guns to their descendants,” he added.

The hour-long episode is shot on location across Uttar Pradesh, New Delhi, Haryana and in Darba Kalan, a town on the Rajasthan-Haryana border. “Each country featured in the series offers a unique perspective to the core subject, from historical, social, and economical standpoints. In India, despite laws being stringent, the issue becomes a bit complex to deal with because of poor enforcement of laws,” he signs off.
