The box-office collection of Sooryavanshi has proved that the audience will head to the cinemas as long as they are assured of an entertaining film. Now, as makers line up one big-screen release after another, Ayushmann Khurrana too is theatre-bound with Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui. While his last release Gulabo Sitabo (2020) was the first Hindi film to take the digital route amid the pandemic, the actor acknowledges that big screens have their own charm. “Many of my favourite memories are linked to me watching movies in a theatre. I’m happy that Hindi films are now set to make a big comeback in theatres,” he begins.

Khurrana, having delivered eight back-to-back hits between 2017 and 2020, is considered the poster boy of content-driven cinema in Bollywood. Aware that the competition has intensified with the advent of OTT platforms, the actor insists that ground-breaking stories will drive the game. “People’s decision to walk into a theatre won’t be based on event films, genres or star cast. It will be based on content. [Through our films] we need to engage them into having a discussion, and entertain them to the fullest.” On that count, the actor believes Abhishek Kapoor’s directorial venture — that sees the leading man fall in love with a transgender woman — fits the bill. Khurrana says the movie is another addition to the remarkable scripts he has got so far. “Since my debut, I’ve been fortunate to be part of incredible visions of filmmakers wanting to make a difference to society. Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is a high-concept theatrical film that will trigger community conversations.”
